Atmospheric Rivers and Extreme Precipitation" — June 30 at the Scuola Normale Superiore, in a conference co-organized with the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Climate and Sustainability

The Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna are organizing the conference entitled "Atmospheric Rivers and Extreme Precipitation" with the participation of Professor Luca Delle Monache, from the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego.
The conference will take place on June 30, 2025, at 3:30 PM in the Sala Azzurra, Palazzo della Carovana, at the Scuola Normale Superiore. It is organized by Prof. Nicola Tasinato of the Scuola Normale Superiore and Prof. Roberto Buizza of the Interdisciplinary Research Center on Sustainability and Climate at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna.
During the seminar, Professor Delle Monache will present his research on atmospheric phenomena capable of transporting vast amounts of moisture, responsible for a significant portion of California’s annual precipitation — up to half of the state’s total water supply. The discussion will also address the effects of climate change on the frequency and intensity of these extreme events.
A central part of the seminar will focus on the development of new forecasting capabilities, combining both physics-based models and artificial intelligence tools, with the goal of improving climate risk management and enhancing the resilience of water systems.
